PERFORMEANDO

PERFORMANCE

TIME: 13:00-16:00
LOCATION:  Dorothea Schelegel Platz
CURATED BY: Hector Canonge  http://www.performeandousa.blogspot.com

PERFORMEANDO (Spanglish word, coined by artist Hector Canonge in the context of Live Action Art) refers to the creation of an event, presentation, act, action, and/or artistic corporal expression. PERFORMEANDO is a project / program focusing on featuring works of performance artists who identify themselves as Latin/o/a or Hispanic living and working in the United States and Europe. PERFORMEANDO was launched in New York City in 2013 featuring local Latin artists in the NYC tri-state area.  In 2014, PERFORMEANDO was presented, for the first time in Berlin with artists coming from different regions in the United States. In 2015 PERFORMEANDO continues with its programming in NYC, Berlin during the Month of Performance Art, and in Argentina, South America.

During MPA-B: Anthology, PERFORMEANDO introduces a group of selected artists who collectively intervene and present public performances at Dorothea Schelegel Platz:
Shawn Escarciga (Mexico-United States).
Angela Freiberger (Brazil-United States).
José Lopez (Mexico-Germany).
Oscar Martín (Spain-Germany).
Veronica Peña (Spain-United States).
Emilio Rojas (Mexico-United States).
Rodolfo Salpietra (Italy-United States).
Isabel Soares (Brazil-Germany).
Doris Steinbichler (Austria-Mexico).

PERFORMEANDO serves as platform for dialogue and exchange, and fosters collaborations based on the premise of experimentation and exploration of Live Action Art in the context of the Hispano-American experience in the United States. The project along with its program presentations in the city and abroad have contributed to a better understanding of the concerns, experiences and creative processes of participating artists. Since 2013, PERFORMEANDO has been presented in collaboration with spaces in the NYC area in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. In 2014, the program was presented and introduced to worldwide audiences during the Month of Performance Art in Berlin, Germany. For 2015 PERFORMEANDO will broaden its scope reaching out to Latin America to work with artists from various countries who have been making an impact in the development of Arte Acción. The exchange of experiences, ideas, and practices in performance will further contribute to the growth of participating artists and independent art spaces in the Americas.

WAITING FOR A MIRACLE

EXHIBITION

Throughout the week of 11th-17th of May I visited various locations that are associated with political power and waited for a miracle. By miracle I mean some sort of tangible and instant improvement in the quality and effectiveness of governance (I retain the right to define a miracle as I please).

The performance consisted of me arriving at the location and waiting, without a specific duration for each wait period. When I got bored, lost “faith”, or if I simply had something better to do I left. Each performance was documented with a selfie type photo, taken so that I and the object of interest were in the frame.

Today the photos will be exhibited, including any evidence of a miracle occurring/that has occurred.

Rituals are arguably the birth of performance: “…a sequence of activities involving gestures, words, and objects, performed in a sequestered place, and performed according to set sequence… for a specific purpose, such as worship, purification, invocation, atonement, rites of passage… Even common actions like hand-shaking and saying hello may be termed rituals.” In this performance event, 3 artists coming from different corners of the globe (Indonesia, Transylvania, New York) present performances which take their root/inspiration from ritual. The performances will be interactive, intimate, site-specific, durational, musical, mystical, solo, collaborative and spiritual. The ghostly atmosphere of the former Delphi Cinema will provide an undertone of the occult to the performances. Come prepared to be not only an audience, but a witness and participant in a supernatural experience.

Über Teüchter is a project which aims to build a performance ‘bridge’ between Glasgow and Berlin – planting it’s initial foundations during the last MPA-BERLIN ANTHOLOGY platform in May 2015 – with a second platform being proposed in August 2015, held in Glasgow.

Why build this bridge? The two cities share a common thread of cultural and social individuality. Both cities transcend their cultural and creative boundaries, choosing to lead and explore where others are content to follow….

Über Teüchter then, is a seed blown from the tree of MPA-B – a possibility of growth, collaboration and experimentation that would take root in a city of similar fertile possibilities – a conduit by which we can share and exchange ideas and learn to work together. Über Teüchter will be an ongoing live art experiment between Berlin and Glasgow – seeking the skills of the Super Outsider to divine new performance methods and opening creative International pathways to explore…

MPA-B ANTHOLOGY 2015 – ÜBER TEÜCHTER PROGRAMME
The proposal is to bring 4 renowned / emerging Glasgow based performance artists to Berlin to present solo introductory works alongside 4 renowned / emerging Berlin based Performance artists as part of MPA-B ANTHOLOGY.

Following an evening of individual introductory presentations they will all spend time together creating something – a potential series of new works, ideas, actions and conversations, collaboratively in various potential combinations.

Whatever comes from their time together is presented at the end of their stay as part of MPA-B 15. This action will precipitate the formation of the Über Teüchter platform in Glasgow in August.

ACTS OF LUST, LOVE AND FEAR

ONE-ON-ONE & SMALL GROUP PERFORMANCES // SOME PRIVATE, SOME PUBLIC

Acts of Lust, Love, and Fear is a performance and performative research project that explores the commodification of the self and relationships in the age of social media, specifically within the realm of romantic love. For centuries, the game of love has generated a host of issues regarding our physical and emotional constitutions as well as our ethical, philosophical, and economic realities and paradigms. Yet with the help of online dating sites, our position within the game appears more measurable than ever before.

Catherine Duquette has created four distinct dating profiles based on four personas abstracted from her everyday identity. On May 29th, Catherine will conduct a series of one-on-one, small group, private, and public experiments based on the data she’s collected from these profiles to investigate the notion of attraction, dating, and romantic love through the lens of online dating sites, often applying the rules of engagement typical to social media.

Social media and online dating sites have changed the way many of us look at love. Such platforms create a hypermarket of desire, where users perform economic agency in the vast assemblage of potential mates. Users curate personal profiles, often tendering the best, most marketable versions of themselves, while identifying desirable partner attributes.

What happens when love appears just at our fingertips and the options limitless? How does the intimacy of the online environment affect the romantic imagination? How does a person(a) shift from the disembodied environment to a face-to-face encounter? Join Catherine in Acts of Lust, Love, and Fear for a series of intimate encounters and awkward exchanges to explore these questions and more.

Bio: Catherine Duquette is a performer, theater artist, and writer originally from the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. She specializes in audience-performer relationships, often investigating skewed acts of perceptions, how personality and body are shaped, controlled, or distorted to meet the expected, aspired, or desired. Her solo work has been supported by MOMENTUM gallery, English Theatre Berlin | International Performing Arts Center, a Fulbright Fellowship in Spain, the International Festival of the Delphic Games in Greece, and the Subterranean Art House in Berkeley, California. She studied theater at Arizona State University and the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England. Before moving to Berlin, Catherine earned her master’s degree in Performance Studies from New York University
