For the MPA-B 2015, MOMENTUM reprises its month-long program of Performance Sundays entitled WORKS ON PAPER.

WORKS ON PAPER inverts classic assumptions of paper as a medium, inviting performance artists to approach paper not as a static blank canvas, but as a dynamic source of conceptual and performative possibility. WORKS ON PAPER III generates a dialogue between performance artists confronted with the challenge of working with paper, and artists whose medium is paper, given the challenge of working with performance.

Taking place every Sunday in May (3, 10, 17, 24 & 31) from 3-6pm, WORKS ON PAPER III takes the form of a cumulative series of performances – with each subsequent performance engaging with the artefacts resulting from the works preceding it in the series. By generating a cumulative, site-specific series through the appropriation of the remains of one another’s performances, the artists in WORKS ON PAPER challenge and reinvigorate the notion of the stationary, disengaged exhibition. What, they ask, is the life of performance after the event concludes? Whether engaging in durational performance, instruction pieces, physical and social architecture, live performance in tandem with other media, sculpture, dance, poetry, or text, these artists challenge expectations of working with the traditional medium of paper in real-time.

Each performance is documented on video, and on 1-28 June 2015, MOMENTUM will exhibit these videos alongside the artefacts in a gallery exhibition.

WAITING FOR A MIRACLE

SITE-SPECIFIC ACTION

Throughout the week of 11th-17th of May I will visit various locations that are associated with political power and wait for a miracle. By miracle I mean some sort of tangible and instant improvement in the quality and effectiveness of governance (I retain the right to define a miracle as I please).

The performance consists of me arriving at the location and waiting, there is no specific duration for each wait period. When I get bored, lose “faith”, or if I simply have something better to do I leave. Each performance will be documented with a selfie type photo, taken so that I and the object of interest are in the frame. At the end of May the photos will be exhibited, including any evidence of a miracle occurring.

Weeks & Whitford make complex psychologically, emotionally and physically intense participatory durational performances involving evolving installations, specific soundscapes, choreographies of inter related actions and improvisations in response to context, site and audience. Liveness is central to their work. The use of sound scores, materials, props and actions enables them to construct personal and shared processes of transition or transformation. They address specific issues and communicate their experience of it to others. These issues, concerns and experiences become aestheticised as part of a highly personal, revelatory on-going narrative. Their work has addressed: alcoholism, cross-dressing, childlessness, caring, ageing, disability, the grind of labour, love, sex, gender, jealousy, infidelity, sin and repentance, despair, hope, faith, ritual, healing and magic. The work allows for Weeks & Whitford as two distinct people, two performers with different but overlapping languages and processes and makes difference and the negotiation of it visible.

In this experimental performance, Weeks & Whitford Inspired by Bosch’s painting ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ and Gnostic interpretations of the story of the Garden of Eden will challenge the established biblical notion of knowledge as sin. Instead they will gather and interpret data, decoding and problem solving alongside ritualised manifestations of consciousness of mortality to represent knowledge as held in its totality between the psyche and pneuma and between the genders.
