ABOUT DENKEREI

U-BAHN ANTIGONE (PART A)

Picture(Click image to enlarge)U-Bahn Antigone is a performance inspired by the socio-spatial specifics of Berlin U-Bahn. The physical organization of space imposes a particular logic and produces norms, docility and conduct of everyday life. Urban planning and architecture manifest an ideology of a time and place, they are created according to it and simultaneously sustain it. Travelling from a starting point to a destination establishes a hierarchy where the “in-between” environments are marginalized and overlooked. Nevertheless, these settings’ liminality encompasses a performative potential. They enhance the fleeting and momentary but also the eternal nature of space and time. By employing durational performance strategies in this environment, we aim to question and comment on these hegemonic hierarchies.
Furthermore, the performance deals with the tension between the human body and over-complex artificial systems (such as transportation systems). Being practical, precise and repetitive, minimalistic but efficient, these structures excel in peculiar aesthetic beauty. They represent humanity’s greatest achievements but they also encompass its inherent self-destructive potential. The human body remains to be the fundamental receiver and building-block of these structures. This body is consistent in its inconsistency; it is continually deteriorating and fragile. It introduces a perpetual instability into any strict configuration. Our project pertain the fascinating interface between these two phenomena.  The performance is constructed around a pre-set route through various platforms and train carts of the Berlin U-Bahn. We employ physical choreographed sequences, rule games and a playful approach to public space. Different languages used relate to participants’ cultural origins.  The performance can be viewed both by passers-by and audiences that accompany the performers from the beginning till the last scene. That will be the first part of the U-Bahn Antigone project.
