FINAL DAY OF THE WEEK-LONG PERFORMANCE ART LABORATORY AT GLOGAUAIR (FROM MAY 21ST TO MAY 26THT)

Picture(Click image to enlarge)GlogauAIR proposal for this week-long Art Laboratory is to work with physical and conceptual LIMITATIONs. By progressively limiting the tools and elements that Performance Art uses, the participants will have to develop and adapt new strengths and strategies in the final presentation of their work. By utilising and working at the beginning of the workshop with objects, words, in groups, in a large space and with different body parts, the final performance will be stripped down of all these tools and taken back to an object-less, word-less, space-less and solo presentation.

GENERAL INFO:
– Max. 6 participants.
– Artists from all fields interested in a cooperative experience and open to work together in a basis of dialogue and exchange.
– The participants will be selected together with the organisers of MPA.
– The organisers’ will be mediating the collaboration and establishing basic tools for the group work. There will also be a person with a camera filming parts of the work, and we might install a projector on the window, for the public to see live what is happening inside the building.
– We leave the possibility for a public presentation depending on the development of the work. This would only be improvised and organized by the participants. Our aim is to avoid the pressure that a public presentation can produce on the cooperative work, having in consideration that in the month of May there will be many performance venues and open stages in Berlin.

For registration and further information please email: info@glogauair.net

ABOUT GLOGAUAIR

Nowadays taking part in an Artist in Residence Programme supposes a desired stage for an artist career as it allows them to put their work in a global context. This model was born at the beginning of the XXth century and has grown widely during the last years with the globalization expansion, up to become essential for the international art market. In a moment where the art’s value gives priority to the process more than the final work, the Artist in Residence Programmes have turned into temples of works in progress and multiculturalism. In GlogauAIR artists from diverse social and geographical backgrounds find a place to develop their works in a dynamic environment of coexistence, exchange of ideas and internationalization. At the same time they get to know a new culture and landscape in Berlin, getting influences from de city, which has became a pioneer place for contemporary culture. The non profit organization GlogauAIR was founded by the Spanish artist Chema Alvargonzález in 2006 with the intention to create a meeting point between artists from all disciplines to work in collaboration, expanding their practice in terms of materials, formats and style. The processes are shown every three months in an open studios exhibition where the public can see the works of the resident artists in a relaxed and festive event.

TABLEAU VIVANT BY MIKE HENTZ AND FRIENDS

Picture(Click image to enlarge)For the MONTH OF PERFORMANCE ART – BERLIN, Mike Hentz creates an installation of 200 square metres surface area as the centerpoint of his performance in the Mindpirates Backyard. The performance itself – a chaotic cacophony of colour, music, scents, objects and action – invites the audience to discover the core idea and script.

Except the name Tableau Vivant, Mike Hentz performances evoke little association with the historical definition of Tableaux Vivants – those live depictions of famous paintings or sculptures made popular in the late 18. century. Hentz works are more of a process-oriented happening and pool of existential test arrangements.

Participants:
Matsuyama Yuko, Pipe Lange, Sergey Kleyn, Karen Boehne, Melanie Marx, Daniel Herrmann, Veronika Schuhmacher, Daniel Nechvatal, Gerard Couty, Rotraut Pape, Jennifer Mulinde, Nina Vitanova, Ninon Liotet, Kissing Couples, Cynthia Iurinic, Mike Hentz and the Mindpirates.

Each series has been accompanied by lectures about different topics on performance art practices today to create discussion, exchange and research on unconventional methods for documenting and approaching actions, experiences and situations that have already vanished. EXTENSION extra embraces practical and theoretical discourse on Performance Art by showcasing a wide range of performance art approaches and a number of unusual ways of working with the basic elements of Performance: space, time and presence.

PERFORMING LINES: LIVE PERFORMANCES

Picture(Click image to enlarge)What do drawing, walking, talking, mapping, writing, weaving, printing, crawling, dancing, observing, singing, thinking, painting, tracing and storytelling have in common? They all proceed along lines of one kind or another. Human beings generate lines wherever they go. Some of these lines are dominant, straight and clearly visible, others might be conceived as being lines of resistance, ghostly and meandering. Time is of course a line, but not necessarily linear in form. Space and place are criss-crossed and inhabited by lines of various kinds. Inspired by the book “Lines – A brief history” by Tim Ingold, „Performing Lines“ focuses on the practice of line creation. Experiencing the relation between movement, knowledge and creation, invited artists will explore the production and significance of lines through performances, performative installations and other media.

WHAT A NICE TIME WE HAD HERE + MY 1000 YEAR OLD BIRTHDAY PARTY

PictureMy 1000 year old birthday partyWhat a Nice Time We Had Here (a project by Alex Nathanson and Dylan Neely)
“The only thing I am afraid of is that we will someday just go home and then we will meet once a year, drinking beer, and nostalgically remembering what a nice time we had here. Promise ourselves that this will not be the case.” (Slavoj Zizek, NYC 2011). What a Nice Time We Had Here is a collaboration between video artist Alex Nathanson and violinist and composer Dylan Neely.  The projections are based in computer programs Nathanson writes in Max/MSP/Jitter to take sensor data from the live performance to control video play and animation.  Neely’s improvisational style is influenced by Eastern European Roma folk music, punk, and minimalism.  The project explores nostalgia, dreams, and the desire for meaningful social and political action, taking Zizek’s above quote as a starting point for exploring footage captured the morning of October 15th at Occupy Wall St. in New York City.

My 1000 year old birthday party (Filipa Guimarães)
This project is a reflection on the profound and disturbing meaning of existence: a contradictory, strange box of pain and pleasure.
The hyperbolic characteristics of this performance/installation are a metaphor for the impossibility to live forever or an interrogation into the desire to extend life. Why do we celebrate the date of birth and what it means personally and socially? Paradoxically, although we don’t like to get old, we make a party each time we have managed to survive for another year. This contradiction means that we actually don’t know how to deal with the close relationship between life and death. My 1000 year old birthday party is a surreal and fictional vision about existence and it’s celebration.
