[ MPA-B ϟ CONCEPTUAL] DIRECT ACTION 2012

Picture(Click image to enlarge)DIRECT ACTION 2012  is a non curated performance festival taking place from May 18th-20th at the Abteilung Für Alles Andere in Berlin-Mitte, during the second edition of the Month of Performance Art – Berlin / May 2012.

Running for its third year, in close cooperation with the Institut Für Alles Mögliche, [ DA12 ] will feature a wide range of performances and experimentations from international artists and students from the Academy of Visual Arts in Liepzig. The festival topic this year focuses on text and performance and it’s a first tryout to bring artists together in the frame of non-expressive and non-dramatic actions, and to highlight artistic practices in relation to writing, as well as to the act of writing in general. Over the course of three days [ DA12 ] will create an open and international platform for multi-layered actions, discussions, and networking in this field, with the idea of providing a platform for people working with different approaches and practices in the realm of performance, and to enable them to show their own positions, to inspire and to instigate a vivid and direct interaction, The festival is explicitly oriented towards lesser known or unknown performance artists, with the scope of providing them with an opportunity to make experiments and show their work at a festival. In addition, artists already working in the field of performance and text have been invited in order to build a broader range of different positions and practices within the festival theme, and to incite a continuous discussion on contemporary Performance Art. [ DA ] also promotes the concept of “work-in-progress”, giving the participants an opportunity to discuss and develop their work during the festival, or even to create new work without the pressure to finish projects. [ DA ] took place for the first time in September 2010 at the Institut Für alles Mögliche in Berlin with 26 participating artists from seven different countries. In May 2011 the festival was presented in the frame of the first edition of the Month of Performance Art – Berlin. 76 artists from 26 countries followed the call for performance on/for video. Almost all the participants’ works were shown during a two-day screening that was accompanied by a programme with invited live acts such as Oliver Breitenstein (DE), Mike Edgerton (USA/NL) and Marion Ritzmann (CH). The screening programme was later shown at exhibitions in Hannover and Penzance, UK.

[ MPA-B ϟ LECTURE SERIES] AT KUNSTHALLE AM HAMBURGER PLATZ

Picture(Click image to enlarge)For the [ MPA-B ϟ LECTURE SERIES] four international guest lecturers have been invited to Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz with the specific aim of confronting the Berlin public with contemporary theoretical and critical discourses in the field of Performance Art. Within the frame of such a broad and diverse month-long platform dedicated to Performance Art, it is important that critical, historical and educational reflections about this particular inter-discipline are also explored. In view of this, MPA-B has established a partnership with the academic institution,  Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, to promote and widen the practical and theoretical understanding of Performance Art, an art form often lacking from Universities and Art Schools’ curricula. The [ MPA-B ϟ LECTURE SERIES] wants to reach out to artists, students, lecturers and audiences to really open discussions, foster international exchanges and compare different models and strategies for presenting Performance Art. At the basis of its enquiry MPA-B asks what is and what could be Performance Art within its cross-disciplinary and fluent borders. It also wants to investigate unconventional ways of preserving and approaching actions, experiences and situations that have already vanished but that could become turning points for future artistic visions.

CO-LAB EDITIONS 8/SAVVY CONTEMPORARY – MADE IN FINLAND

Picture(Click image to enlarge)For the 8th edition of the CO-LAB Performance Art programme, four Finnish artists have been invited to Berlin for one week to collaborate and produce new work. Leena Kela, Thomasz Szrama, Kimmo Modig and Juha Valkeapää will take up residence at Freies Museum for a week, with a final presentation on May 18th.
Recently, Finland and Finnish artists have become more visible in Berlin due to an “invasion” of festivals and programs dedicated to Performance art. Finland has already demonstrated an enormous interest in performance art with a remarkable structure to support artists and festivals, leading the discipline towards an important status within art making. Furthermore, it is common to find international and regional support by the Finnish state and its visual arts funding system for artists to present work abroad. There is a clear acceptance and stimulus for artists to continue their practice and to develop work, both in educational settings and professional environments. This unique support places Finland and Finnish performance artists into a position of status within the discipline internationally and throughout Europe. It is often difficult to receive state funding in Europe for performance art, especially compared with theater or dance. There is an urgency to find a place within the existing funding systems to find support for performance art. It is clear that Finland is already working towards this goal, visible in the quality of works presented by Finnish based artists. In honor of the achievements in this discipline by Finland and its artists, CO-LAB editions 8 anticipates an extraordinary event in Berlin.

UNSPOKEN, REGULATE/RHYTHM

Picture(Click image to enlarge)Unspoken, Regulate/Rhythm project is a defined spatial relationship shaped
collectively by the undefined audiences’ psychology extracted from the
existing and visible special frame via video, audio equipment, wifi and movement path of three dancers; By studying how the dictator in this space immersed in the spirit of community and eventually lost his will and ability of independent thinking from controlling the voices of audience, then being blind, confused and inappropriate. The not-logical-related group is insanely influencing the tangible and non-tangible space in the world. Three dancers, wearing white, blue and black costumes, separately express three different individual/ group psychologies, and the power relationship reflected from the status of mentality and space. The narrative of the project is followed in sequenced in different corners of the space with the ball of yarn in dancer’s hand: From innocently discovery (white), transited to the anxious to the space (blue) and when the ultimate power (black) appears, other status of the psychology became the dead herbaria on the wall. This project at the end was turned into a poem on Facebook for audience to be able to participate and interact lively via wifi. Besides the live show recorded the whole process as the presentation at the exhibition, it will be planned to show the live online simultaneously. It will not only enhance the interaction and participation, and also activate the relationship among the audience, power and the space.

CLOSING DAY DIE MADE IM SPECK: PERFORMANCE,  SOUND INSTALLATION AND LECTURES (RUNNING SINCE MAY 15TH)

Picture(Click image to enlarge)Die Made im Speck is an installation and performance project about the dimensions of social disgust. Disgust doesn’t only relate to biological decomposition processes but also to social groups and behavior. In Pasolini’s work disgust manifests itself as moral and sexual squalidness, which he associated with fascism. Sartre conceives disgust rather as senselessness and randomness of existence. After all disgust is an important topic of groundbreaking philosophical reactions and concepts of the 20th century. The connection between the human‐existential and social disgust can be seen, for example, in the viewing “gures of TV‐Shows like Das Dschungelcamp on RTL ‐ the market share was at 40 percent, meaning 7.28 million viewers – in which celebrities of Germany eat maggots and get showered in cockroaches. Massmedia shows such as Gnadenlos (Sat.1) and Das Messie‐Team (RTL2), feign to be debates on a socially‐specified dimension. Yet they point their anger at distorted social images without, however, identifying and analyzing the underlying social pathologies. The insights of science are always lesser than the pool of man’s experience. Every scientific interest in insight is always confronted with certain leftovers, realities that are methodically elusive. In so far as disgust is the eruption of the negative and the carnally‐unknown, science is constantly faced with its limitations. The present with its complexity of diverse indexes can only be captured, simulated and experienced by and through art. With die made im speck we attempt to collectively approach the dimensions of social disgust from different angles and to further deconstruct it. This deconstruction will touch on and confront us with our own boundaries in relation to our moral, our mentality and our patience. In this respect, the different artistic fields shall converge to a total work of art.

THE PLACE OF MY MEMOREY ODER DAS MEER HINTER DER MAUER

Picture(click image to enlarge)I move and while moving believe to re-encounter memories. Memories which remember my being here and somewhere else too. Traveling through space and time, I am a compilation of events and sensations recollected through my life, my life of mixed memories, memories I share with the collective. A body that remembers. A body that re-members itself. A human being that moves in a the place and at the same time reconstruct a new place to stay. These memories enter into one another, they go inside one another, they mingle and intertwine, they grow up. They created something new, a new identity. Once, I had a dream of my homeland, Cuba. In this dream Cuba looked much like the old city of Berlin just about the time the Wall was being built. It was strange. I mixed the two cities in my dreams, I put these cities of my memories together in the time-line of history, past, present and future, all gathered into one instant. This event grew in my unconsciousness until it made me think more and more how memory defines our lives and our being as a part of a place. This performance is about memory, space, homeland, identity, transformation and migration.

ABOUT F.I.T.

Since it was founded in 2002, the FIT – freie internationale tankstelle – has stood for art that is relevant to society. Art that uses aesthetics to communicate ideas of individual and societal concerns. Art that is visionary in its conception. The mission of FIT is to reclaim the abandoned architecture of filling stations and to rebrand their original function as sources of fossil fuel. It is a vision of transformation. Where the stations of exhausted natural resources, are transformed by the imagination of those who gather, in the spirit of collaboration, to produce a new fuel for humanity. To tap into an inexhaustable resource; the life force of human creativity. It is the mission of FIT to be all inclusive in its commitment to exploring the full spectrum of human and societal creativity, including those expressions not commonly valued by society.  FIT is interested in extended concepts of art (“Erweiterter Kunstbegriff“), such as creating social sculpture that restore art to an active role in society. To explore and stimulate the artistic-philosophical content inherent in cultural and social activities.  The artists presented by FIT reflect these ideas by their own means, whether through painting, installations, performance or actions, with a clear impetus to enlighten.

ESCAPE – INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL (MAY 11TH TO MAY 19TH)

Picture(Click image to enlarge)ESCAPE 2012 is the programmatic title of the International Festival planned and organized by Open Space Berlin and BLO- Ateliers. Escape is a geopolitical phenomenon associated with third world countries, or war zones which often leads to terrible humanitarian crisis on the borders of Europe and beyond. The question of whether or not escaping is possible has also been highlighted by the recent nuclear catastrophe in the highly developed country of Japan. With this mind, this theme has been consciously chosen to serve us as a screen and source of inspiration for an International Art Festival with a focus on performing arts, and cultural exchange between Asian, European, US- and South American artists and the local performance scene in Berlin.
