ABOUT AGORA

AGORA is a platform that empowers individuals through multi-disciplinary collaborative creation, a gathering space of professionals, driven by the urge to explore new ways of interaction and collaboration in today’s context. We are dedicated on creating intelligent forms of producing, working and living – artistically, socially and economically. As an airport of ideas; making bridges, connecting talented and engaged people. Agora is also an incubator; developing and supporting artistic, social, environmental and economical projects. Much of our space healthily remains in constant flux. Every few days the tables and walls shift to incorporate a new art exhibition, workshop, lecture, performance, yoga class, organic food fair, film screenings and all sorts of cultural projects.
Since our founding in June 2011 we have quickly gathered a community made up of members from over 30 nationalities. Like our resilient home base of Berlin we view the world’s differences and its diversity as powering the potential for constructive growth and advancement.

ABOUT ACUD KUNSTVEREIN

ESCAPE – INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL (MAY 11TH TO MAY 19TH)

Picture(Click image to enlarge)ESCAPE 2012 is the programmatic title of the International Festival planned and organized by Open Space Berlin and BLO- Ateliers. Escape is a geopolitical phenomenon associated with third world countries, or war zones which often leads to terrible humanitarian crisis on the borders of Europe and beyond. The question of whether or not escaping is possible has also been highlighted by the recent nuclear catastrophe in the highly developed country of Japan. With this mind, this theme has been consciously chosen to serve us as a screen and source of inspiration for an International Art Festival with a focus on performing arts, and cultural exchange between Asian, European, US- and South American artists and the local performance scene in Berlin.

ABOUT ART LABORATORY BERLIN

ART LABORATORY BERLIN, a non-profit organisation, was founded in Autumn 2006 by an international team of art historians and artists. As a non-commercial art space, ART LABORATORY BERLIN was established as a platform for projects concentrating on the border between visual arts and related artistic and scholarly fields. The main focus of interest is the exhibition and placement of contemporary visual art that interacts with other fields, such as text, music, science, law an technology. Each of these points of interaction is represented by a series of diverse exhibitions and events. Our goal is to explore the manifold approaches of interaction and interconnection between genres. Our current and upcoming series are ‘Time and Technology’ and ‘Synaesthesia’. ART LABORATORY BERLIN is also interested in supporting contact between artists and the public as part of our exhibitions. To improve a better understanding of emerging and experimental art, we include public discussions with artists and curators. Additionally our program provides lectures, film screenings, curator’s talks, and workshops. Currently ART LABORATORY BERLIN is run by Christian de Lutz and Regine Rapp.

SCHÖNHEITSMASCHINE – PERFORMANCE AND INSTALLATION BY BÖSEDIVA (ROBIN DETJE/ELISA DUCA) AND JOCHEN ARBEIT

Picture(click image to enlarge)The rules of theater are broken. The actions presented are disgusting, unpleasant, the performers are too close, there is no storyline, no climax or catharsis. These rules are being broken in a clearly defined visual-art-context, not in a theater space, where breaking the rules has become a conventional provocation of the audience. In an art space, the theatrical gestures and actions take on a direct and raw feel. In a space devoted to the electronic arts, they signify the incursion of something archaic: pre-electronic sweat in the age of digital reproduction. The installation uses digital video recordings of the performance as a mirror, a means of reification. Video mediates processes both electronically  and digitally. The framing is predefined, as if by a nervous, twitching painter. The video in this instance is an electronic technology for toying with time. Processes are denatured and abstracted and become surfaces. They become beautiful: Process is now “kunstschön”.  Between these two poles, bösediva is trying for the highest dramatic tension possible: between process – live, “natural”, time-based and stripped of the kitsch of “meaning” – and it’s transformation into a beautiful image. The true interest of the artists is directed at the invisible gap, that buzz in-between process and its representation we are as yet unable to electronically pick up or reproduce.

PACKET SOUP: PERFORMANCE VERSTILLING BY NATHALIE FARI AND BERNHARD REISS AT RICHARDPLATZ

Picture(Click image to enlarge)The German-Brazilian performance artist Nathalie Fari will be presenting one of her current collaborative works – VERSTILLING – with the multi-instrumentalist Bernhard Reiss as part of the PACKET – SOUP project.
The starting point for this multi-piece and site-specific work, which began in June 2010, is the eruption of the Icelandic volcano, which grounded aircraft and paralysed European airspace for several days.  VERSTILLING will not only associate this grounding of aircraft or temporary happening in today’s fast-paced world with a kind of “standstill”, it will also be seen as a necessary occurrence for altering or ‘”decelerating” people’s sense of time and space.

“The idea of deceleration is for me an aspect of sustainability, but it is also an artistic strategy for alerting people to the way they perceive their environment and particularly how they deal with time.”

ABOUT SAVVY CONTEMPORARY

SAVVY CONTEMPORARY – The laboratory of form-ideas is a lab of conceptual, intellectual, artistic and cultural development and exchange; an atelier in which ideas are transformed to forms and forms to ideas, or gain cognition in their status quo. This is achieved with respect to conception, implementation and contestation of ideas with/in time and space. Every two months, SAVVY CONTEMPORARY will present an exhibition in its gallery space aimed at fostering the dialogue between “western art” and “non-western art”. In this light, a curator will be invited by SAVVY’s art direction to further invite an artist from Europe or North-America and another artist from Africa, South-America, Asia or Australia. This “trialogue” will be “moderated” by the invited curator. The process of the trialogue and its result will culminate in an exhibition and a publication to the exhibition.

THE POWERS OF ART SEARCHES AN AVATAR – EPISODE 4

Picture(Click image to enlarge)The Powers of Art is the only television show currently in the media dedicated to the performing arts and paranormal activity. Esotericism and Art share a blood line, and go as far back as life as we know and understand it. But neither need be shrouded in mystery or secrecy. Neither need be only for a narrow circle of “enlightened”, “initiated” or specially educated people. The powers of art lay available for all of us. And have for time immortal. This is what Madame Madoom and Alex X.Pert are here to remind you at this very special 4th episode, LIVE from Alex TV studios in Wedding, where they will be talking to artists from the mysterious world of the Month of Performance Art, or rather…..the Month of Paranormal Activity…..

STAGING THE WORLD – PERFORMING THE FLOOR.

FINE LINES: AN EXHIBITION BY NUG

Picture(Click Image to enlarge)Skalitzers presents a new solo show by infamous Swedish artist Nug.

Taking the energy and abstract expression of writing to new media and contexts, Nug has gained wide recognition in recent years for his graffiti-inspired actions. Nug’s exploration of form, informed by his background as a writer in Sweden, leads him to an artistic territory so pure that it touches upon the very essence of human behaviour – “a total negation of the form and complete rejection of comprehensible behavioural patterns”.

“I’m focusing more on the energy released from performing graffiti, an energy that comes out in irrational lines and moves based upon instinct and feeling.” (Nug, 2008)

Fine Lines

The tag, also referred to as handstyle, urban calligraphy or ‘writing’, is a personal statement or signature: an expression of identity. The work of many artists starts and ends with the tag. For some the tag represents the basis from which they developed their style into less abstract art forms. For many of these artists tagging is a relevant part of their work, others’ entire message is contained within their tag. Reaching across culture, class and age, the tag is a global art form: a pure form of self expression and style. Originating in Philadelphia in the 1960s and New York in the early 1970s, for decades it has laid the foundation for a number of related art forms which have developed from the streets to galleries worldwide.

THE PLACE OF MY MEMOREY ODER DAS MEER HINTER DER MAUER

Picture(Click image to enlarge)I move and while moving believe to re-encounter memories. Memories which remember my being here and somewhere else too. Traveling through space and time, I am a compilation of events and sensations recollected through my life, my life of mixed memories, memories I share with the collective. A body that remembers. A body that re-members itself. A human being that moves in a the place and at the same time reconstruct a new place to stay. These memories enter into one another, they go inside one another, they mingle and intertwine, they grow up. They created something new, a new identity. Once, I had a dream of my homeland, Cuba. In this dream Cuba looked much like the old city of Berlin just about the time the Wall was being built. It was strange. I mixed the two cities in my dreams, I put these cities of my memories together in the time-line of history, past, present and future, all gathered into one instant. This event grew in my unconsciousness until it made me think more and more how memory defines our lives and our being as a part of a place. This performance is about memory, space, homeland, identity, transformation and migration.

ABOUT F.I.T.

Since it was founded in 2002, the FIT – freie internationale tankstelle – has stood for art that is relevant to society. Art that uses aesthetics to communicate ideas of individual and societal concerns. Art that is visionary in its conception. The mission of FIT is to reclaim the abandoned architecture of filling stations and to rebrand their original function as sources of fossil fuel. It is a vision of transformation. Where the stations of exhausted natural resources, are transformed by the imagination of those who gather, in the spirit of collaboration, to produce a new fuel for humanity. To tap into an inexhaustable resource; the life force of human creativity. It is the mission of FIT to be all inclusive in its commitment to exploring the full spectrum of human and societal creativity, including those expressions not commonly valued by society.  FIT is interested in extended concepts of art (“Erweiterter Kunstbegriff“), such as creating social sculpture that restore art to an active role in society. To explore and stimulate the artistic-philosophical content inherent in cultural and social activities.  The artists presented by FIT reflect these ideas by their own means, whether through painting, installations, performance or actions, with a clear impetus to enlighten.
