[ MPA-B ϟ MPA open ] 48HR PERFORMANCE ART MARATHON (STARTS MAY 11TH AT 18:00 – ENDS MAY 13TH AT 18:00)

Picture(Click on image to enlarge)48 hours of non-stop Performance Art madness.  MPA open is a platform for artists who want to present their work at MPA so badly that they are willing to put up with hardcore conditions: 45 minutes for each work, including set up and take down, no tech, and up all night. Beginning on Friday May 11 at 18:00 and finishing on Sunday May 13th at 18:00, MPA open will showcase up to 62 performances by national and international artists from a wide variety of backgrounds: an abundance of cutting edge positions in the blurrily defined field of what people call Performance Art. Lots of food for thought, and a rampant performance art rave at the same time.
This will be the Month of Performance Art at its wildest!

Performances will take place at three different locations all within the ACUD Kunstverein premises: Acud Theater, Serendipity Gallery and outdoor courtyard.

ABOUT ACUD KUNSTVEREIN

ESCAPE – INERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL (MAY 11TH – MAY 19TH)

Picture(Click on image to enlarge)ESCAPE 2012 is the programmatic title of the International Festival planned and organized by Open Space Berlin and BLO- Ateliers. Escape is a geopolitical phenomenon associated with third world countries, or war zones which often leads to terrible humanitarian crisis on the borders of Europe and beyond. The question of whether or not escaping is possible has also been highlighted by the recent nuclear catastrophe in the highly developed country of Japan. With this mind, this theme has been consciously chosen to serve us as a screen and source of inspiration for an International Art Festival with a focus on performing arts, and cultural exchange between Asian, European, US- and South American artists and the local performance scene in Berlin. The programme will show the most current  trends in the field of performing arts, which no longer engages only visual artists, but has come to involve artists from all genres. The goal of Escape is to show this immense diversity of expression. The highlight of the Festival is to present the latest artistic work of international guests and of Berlin- based artists, to a Berliner audience in the public urban space, on ships, on trains and buses. In addition to an art parade, in which a broad spectrum of cultural initiatives and artists can participate, site- specific performances in theateres, galleries, museums and artists studios will take place. Interactive art  projects such as the building of escape vehicles to serve as floats and which also will be used as a shuttles between the diverse venues and as parade vehicles, have also been planned. Another essential module of the festival is a three day-long art laboratory, which will enable a direct cooperation between artists with different cultural backgrounds and to ultimately facilitate the presentation of brand new works. A symposium with international and Berlin- based artists will also make it possible for the press and public, to get to know the artists outside of their performance work and to discuss questions about their ways of working and the cultural and political conditions in different parts of the world.

STAGING THE WORLD: PERFORMING THE FLOOR (SCREENING AND PERFORMANCE) LIVE PERFORMANCE “KING KONG THEORY” VON NADJA VERENA MARCIN

ABOUT M O M E N T U M

With a permanent gallery in Kunstquartier Bethanien, MOMENTUM is a global platform for time-based art.  MOMENTUM’s mission is to promote the work of exceptional international artists while continuously reassessing ‘what is time-based art?’.  MOMENTUM is a non-profit organization which collaborates with commercial, non-commercial galleries, private collections and art initiatives. Launched as an international symposium of galleries and art professionals in Sydney in 2010, MOMENTUM is now based in Berlin with an exhibition and salon program, and is developing several artist residencies in international locations.  The Berlin gallery functions as a gallery of galleries, selectively inviting international artists through their gallerists and private collectors to show time-based work in Berlin. Our program also includes curated group shows.  Each show is accompanied by a salon event in which selected art professionals are brought together to discuss the show and the issues it raises. MOMENTUM is launching a public video art space in Rosenthaler Platz, the thriving heart of Berlin’s gallery district.  MOMENTUM Also has a growing collection of video art donated by the artists it has worked with, which are also exhibited in Berlin and abroad, and which can be seen on: www.momentumworldwide.org

SCHÖNHEITSMASCHINE – PERFORMANCE AND INSTALLATION BY BÖSEDIVA (ROBIN DETJE/ELISA DUCA) AND JOCHEN ARBEIT

Picture(click image to enlarge)The rules of theater are broken. The actions presented are disgusting, unpleasant, the performers are too close, there is no storyline, no climax or catharsis. These rules are being broken in a clearly defined visual-art-context, not in a theater space, where breaking the rules has become a conventional provocation of the audience. In an art space, the theatrical gestures and actions take on a direct and raw feel. In a space devoted to the electronic arts, they signify the incursion of something archaic: pre-electronic sweat in the age of digital reproduction. The installation uses digital video recordings of the performance as a mirror, a means of reification. Video mediates processes both electronically and digitally. The framing is predefined, as if by a nervous, twitching painter. The video in this instance is an electronic technology for toying with time. Processes are denatured and abstracted and become surfaces. They become beautiful: Process is now “kunstschön”.  Between these two poles, bösediva is trying for the highest dramatic tension possible: between process – live, “natural”, time-based and stripped of the kitsch of “meaning” – and it’s transformation into a beautiful image. The true interest of the artists is directed at the invisible gap, that buzz in-between process and its representation we are as yet unable to electronically pick up or reproduce.

UNSPOKEN, REGULATE/RHYTHM

Picture(Click on image to enlarge)Unspoken, Regulate/Rhythm project is a defined spatial relationship shaped collectively by the undefined audiences’ psychology extracted from the
existing and visible special frame via video, audio equipment, wifi and movement path of three dancers. By studying how the dictator in this space immersed in the spirit of community and eventually lost his will and ability of independent thinking from controlling the voices of audience, then being blind, confused and inappropriate. The not-logical-related group is insanely influencing the tangible and non-tangible space in the world. Three dancers, wearing white, blue and black costumes, separately express three different individual/ group psychologies, and the power relationship reflected from the status of mentality and space. The narrative of the project is followed in sequenced in different corners of the space with the ball of yarn in dancer’s hand. From innocently discovery (white), transited to the anxious to the space (blue) and when the ultimate power (black) appears, other status of the psychology became the dead herbaria on the wall. This project at the end was turned into a poem on Facebook for audience to be able to participate and interact lively via wifi. Besides the live show recorded the whole process as the presentation at the exhibition, it will be planned to show the live online simultaneously. It will not only enhance the interaction and participation, andalso activate the relationship among the audience, power and the space.

THE PLACE OF MY MEMORY ODER DAS MEER HINTER DER MAUER

Picture(Click on image to enlarge)I move and while moving believe to re-encounter memories. Memories which remember my being here and somewhere else too. Traveling through space and time, I am a compilation of events and sensations recollected through my life, my life of mixed memories, memories I share with the collective. A body that remembers. A body that re-members itself. A human being that moves in a the place and at the same time reconstruct a new place to stay. These memories enter into one another, they go inside one another, they mingle and intertwine, they grow up. They created something new, a new identity. Once, I had a dream of my homeland, Cuba. In this dream Cuba looked much like the old city of Berlin just about the time the Wall was being built. It was strange. I mixed the two cities in my dreams, I put these cities of my memories together in the time-line of history, past, present and future, all gathered into one instant. This event grew in my unconsciousness until it made me think more and more how memory defines our lives and our being as a part of a place. This performance is about memory, space, homeland, identity, transformation and migration.

ABOUT F.I.T.

Since it was founded in 2002, the FIT – freie internationale tankstelle – has stood for art that is relevant to society. Art that uses aesthetics to communicate ideas of individual and societal concerns. Art that is visionary in its conception. The mission of FIT is to reclaim the abandoned architecture of filling stations and to rebrand their original function as sources of fossil fuel. It is a vision of transformation. Where the stations of exhausted natural resources, are transformed by the imagination of those who gather, in the spirit of collaboration, to produce a new fuel for humanity. To tap into an inexhaustable resource; the life force of human creativity. It is the mission of FIT to be all inclusive in its commitment to exploring the full spectrum of human and societal creativity, including those expressions not commonly valued by society.  FIT is interested in extended concepts of art (“Erweiterter Kunstbegriff“), such as creating social sculpture that restore art to an active role in society. To explore and stimulate the artistic-philosophical content inherent in cultural and social activities.  The artists presented by FIT reflect these ideas by their own means, whether through painting, installations, performance or actions, with a clear impetus to enlighten.
