888: 8 HOURS LABOUR. 8 HOURS RECREATION. 8 HOURS REST.

Picture(Click on image to enlarge)The project 888 tries to translate ambiguous work symptoms through different performative pieces.

The performance DAY-N by Mio Chareteau replaces the cadence of time with a scansion that corresponds to its rhythm. The passing of seconds, usually orchestrated for the mechanical hand, is here enumerated aloud.

The setup Appendices by Jeanne Gillard and Nicolas Rivet supplies the lighting of the exhibition space by harvesting the driving force of several pedal-boards placed in local annexes of the main exhibition building – thus sketching out an invisible parallel workforce.

Above the norm by Zosia Kwasieborska and Georg Keller is a re-adoption of the Stakhanovite movement to our age. The Stakhanovite movement sprung in eastern Europe during the communism, a honoring for leading workers to walk in front of the 1st May parade.

ABOUT SUBSTITUT

Substitut is an independent non-profit space and platform for art from Switzerland in Berlin founded by Urs Küenzi in 2007. The venue encourages a long term international exchange. The name Substitut plays on the behalf of the institute, subculture and even subversion. The name reflects the fact that it does not constitute a pure alternative space or an institution, but a mixture. The name Substitut can also be seen as a critical representation of art in society. Substitut is a project of  the art theoretician and independent curator Urs Küenzi.
