THE MARIA DE ROBE COLLECTION: STRUCTURES, POTENTIAL AND MECHANISMS. DISCUSSION – MINI CONFERENCE
There is much talk today about the relationship between performance art and documentation. The Maria de Robe Collection at the Association for Performance Art in Berlin is the working title for a long term collaboration with several museums in- and around the city. One of the central activities of the newly founded Association (APAB e.V. i.Gr.) is the construction of a professional structure for data and archive purposes. Apart from the traditional gathering of information, the APAB archive structure should be an active place where the collecting and documenting of performance art reflects its archiving methodology.
The Maria de Robe Collection is an initiative within this central task of the association and revolves around the difficulties of documenting an ephemeral, live event and the impossibility of its representation in the documentation. During the mini-conference we will talk with several potential partners from different museums in Berlin about the potential to organise performance art events that directly engage with the museum collection. Evoking what I call the “ephemeral re-enclosure” of a collection of museum objects by the presentness of a performance artist.
